The 29th Annual Meeting of DESERT FISHES COUNCIL will be 20-23 November (Thursday - Sunday) 1997 in the National Park Service auditorium at Furnace Creek, Death Valley National Park. An informal social customarily occurs in the hotel bar the preceding (Wednesday) evening. Technical papers and posters are presented starting at 8:00 AM Thursday and continuing until 5:00 PM each day through Saturday. The DFC business meeting and banquet are Friday afternoon and evening, while a field trip on Sunday visits Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and perhaps Cottonball Marsh.

HOTEL - Daily lodging rates are motel: $83.00, and cabins $70.00, plus 9% tax. All rooms have 2 beds. One night's room and tax required as a deposit by October 19, 1997, at which time remaining unrented rooms from our reserved block will be opened to the public. Individual cancellations must be made 48 hours in advance to avoid being charged. Reservations may be guaranteed with the all major credit cards by calling Furnace Creek Ranch (760 ) 786-2345, FAX 786-2307. Tell them you are with the Desert Fishes Council. A member has recently called to our attention a possible alternate hotel that may also be of interest. If you are looking for a roommate to share room costs, submit this form to have your information posted here, where others seeking roommates may find it and contact you.

TRAVEL to and from Death Valley is generally easiest by private vehicle from Las Vegas. Note that dates of this meeting overlap with a large computer industry meeting (Comdex) which always fills all Las Vegas hotels and reserves all rental cars. Make your Las Vegas reservations FAR in advance. Those interested in car pooling may submit information to be included with that of others in the list of interested persons.

A MEETING REGISTRATION FORM must be received by the 1 September, 1997 deadline to avoid paying late registration rates, to permit acceptance of abstracts, and generally to assist the local committee with planning. Note that registration is also more costly for non-members. Join DFC now. Cancellations will result in a refund of all monies paid except for a $5.00 processing fee.

PRESENTATIONS of both oral papers and posters relevant to the mission of the Desert Fishes Council are solicited. No paper or poster will be accepted and scheduled without receipt of 1. correctly formatted abstract, 2. pre-registration, and 3. payment of dues for calendar year 1997 on or before the 1 September, 1997 deadline. Space in the program is limited and order of receipt may determine acceptance.

SYPOSIUM - This year's special symposium will be "Fish Barriers as a Management Tool." Those interested in contributing papers to this symposium should contact the organizer, Sally Stefferud, at U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Arizona Ecological Services State Office, 2321 W. Royal Palm Rd., Suite 103, Phoenix, AZ 85021-4951 tel. (602) 640-2720.

AREA REPORTS are coordinated by ecoregion. Agencies and other organizations wishing to contribute information to these multi-authored, summary reports should contact appropriate area coordinators directly. Area coordinators will also be contacting selected agency offices in their region to solicit input. Contact Nadine Kanim nadine_kanim_at_mail.fws.gov (tel. (916) 842-5763) with questions about this process.

AWARDS are given every year for best student papers presented at meetings.

TRAVEL GRANTS are available to help defer expenses related to presentation of papers or posters. Those applying for travel grants will have the deadline for receipt of pre-registration and membership dues extended by six weeks.

RESOLUTIONS for consideration at the Business Meeting must be received on or before the abstract deadline. Send resolutions to Walter R. Courtenay Jr.; Dept. Bio. Sci.; FL Atlantic Univ.; Boca Raton, FL 33431-0991; FAX: 561 367 2749); courtenw_at_fau.edu.
