This note received 2/6/96 from Alan Riggs - USGS Denver
It occurs to me that it might be worthwhile for some folks to stay at the new Longstreet Inn and Casino at Stateline Nevada (40 miles plus or minus from Furnace Creek (about 8 mi. N of Death Valley Junction)). They have a government rate of $41.73/night (tax included) that could be attractive to folks on short budgets.
With a little carpooling, a lot of money could be saved. Their reservation number is 800 508 9493. Before this goes out as the absolute truth, I'd check with the staff 702 372 1777 to make sure the gov't. price will be good through meeting time, and that they don't have something else going and are already booked up. These are way better accommodations for the money than one can get at Furnace Creek, and the restaurant is pretty good, especially considering its location. Also, they have a reasonable selection of beers on tap, and a huge picture window out onto the Funeral Mountains. Note that breakfast starts at 7:00 AM.
NOTE THE FOLLOWING RESPONSE FROM PHIL PISTER, DFC EXECUTIVE SECRETARY, HOWEVER, BEFORE YOU MAKE RESERVATIONS:
The only objection I can see to this is that we usually get about three free rooms from the Furnace Creek people, the number depending upon the number of rooms at Furnace Creek Ranch rented by DFC members. The free rooms go a long ways toward handling our guests: mainly Mexican members. Perhaps it could be worded somehow: "If money is really a major problem, and if you don't mind the inconvenience of a commute, rooms are available at....." with further details. Of course if we up the registration fee by about $5.00 we could probably cover some of the rooming costs we would otherwise lose through not getting as many free rooms. Ideas? Thoughts?
Phil.
