The Desert Fishes Council has a long history of presenting awards at its annual meetings for the best papers presented by students (enrolled on the date of the deadline for abstracts). Since 1986 two awards have been given for oral papers:
The Robert Rush and Frances Hubbs Miller Award is given to the best paper presented by a student from Mexico or other Latin American country.
The Carl L. Hubbs Award is given to the overall best student paper regardless of origin.
In 2006 an additional award was added:
The Poster Award for the overall best poster presented by a student.
For 2010 an additional award will be added:
The W. L. Minckley Conservation Award is intended to recognize individuals or organizations whose work has significantly influenced the conservation of desert aquatic ecosystems and/or the native organisms dependent on them.
Individuals or organizations will be recognized who have demonstrated their commitment to preservation of sustainable ecosystem management of desert aquatic ecosystems and their native biota through some combination of research, publication, outreach, mentoring, development of public policy, individual activities on private land, or particularly creative approaches that are aimed to further perpetuate into the indefinite future healthy, naturally functioning desert aquatic ecosystems.
The award may be presented annually if a deserving individual (s) or organization is nominated and meets the criteria mentioned above. The Minckley family will review nominations and will select the recipient (s), which will then be named during the annual meeting of the Desert Fishes Council. Recipient (s) will receive a plaque of recognition and a letter describing the achievement.
Those wishing to compete for these awards must indicate desire to compete when submitting their abstract by completing the Award field in the abstract submission form. Criteria on which awards are evaluated are outlined in the forms that the award competition judges use.
As revised at the 2000 meeting by membership vote, the rules state that competitors must be first author of their papers and the research reported upon must have been done while a student. Two co-authors are allowed, but the research should have been initiated solely by the student. If others were involved in organizing and/or completing the research, then the paper should not be submitted in the Hubbs or Miller award categories.
Certificates are awarded to winners at the Council's general business meeting at or near the end of each meeting. Students competing for awards are strongly encouraged to attend the business meeting.
