Drought, floods, and fires: challenges and op portunities for native fish management in Arizona

Abstract

The past year has been interesting. Following an eight-year drought, the winter of 2004-2005 was the wettest in Arizona in a decade. Reservoirs in the state went from nearly empty to nearly full, vegetation in the Sonoran Desert responded, and streams and springs were recharged. Native fishes surviving the drought were in constricted habitats that were greatly affected by winter/spring floods. Unfortunately, following the wet winter was the 2005 wild-fire season. The second largest wild-fire in recent Arizona history burned much of the Tonto and Prescott national forests, and threatened several native fishes. Additionally, several other large fires threatened many other native aquatic resources. I present an overview of Nature’s impacts in Arizona during the past year; as well as some challenges and opportunities provided by its unique conditions.

Sequía, inundaciones e incendios: retos y oportunidades para el manejo de especies nativas de peces en Arizona El año pasado fue interesante: después de una sequía de ocho años, el invierno 2004-2005 fue el más húmedo en Arizona en toda una década. Los reservorios de agua casi se llenaron, la vegetación en el Desierto de Sonora reverdeció, y las corrientes fluviales y mana ntiales se recargaron. Los peces nativos que sobrevivieron al periodo de sequía se encontraban en habitats restringidos que fueron drásticamente afectados por las inundaciones de invierno/primavera. Desafortunadamente, posterior al húmedo invierno llegó la estación de incendios forestales de 2005. El segundo incendio forestal más grande en la historia moderna de Arizona arrasó mucho de los bosques nacionales de Tonto y Prescott, y puso en riesgo a varias especies nativas de peces. Adicionalmente, otros grandes incendios amenazaron muchas otros recursos acuáticos nativos. Presento un panorama de los impactos de la naturaleza que se dieron en Arizona a lo largo del año pasado, así también comento sobre retos y oportunidades que se dan a través de estas condiciones únicas.
