Abstract
The catfish family Ictaluridae consists of seven genera and 47 species. The genus Ictalurus in Mexico is represented by species that are very p oorly studied and that may be genetic reservoirs of interest for increased
utilization of this resource. The Nort h American distribution of the group is closely tied to hydrography. The principal commercially exploited species is channel catfish, I. punctatus, whose populations appear to be characterized by a high degree of genetic variability, possibly from genetic exchanges favored by the hydrological systems supporting the wild type. Although I. punctatus is the catfish most exploited due to its characteristics of resistance, adaptability, and food conversion (all highly positive for farming), it is possible to obtain a stable hybrid by crossing it with blue catfish, I. furcatus, a species offering even better advantages. In Mexico, there are other hybridization possibilities with additional species, such as Yaqui catfish, I. pricei, and “Chihuahua catfish,” I. sp., as well as additional species from central and southern parts of the country. The potential benefits for Mexican fish farming as well as for the conservation of the genus should be evaluated, given that its species may present attractive market characteristics.
