Abstract

This study examined the diet of Hemichromis guttatus, the spotted jewelfish (sometimes called “jewel cichlid”), an exotic species, with regard to seasonal changes and sizes of specimens from two localities, Poza Churince (PC) and Poza San José el Anteojo (PSJA), both located in the Cuatro Ciénegas Area for the Protection of Flora and Fauna. Eight collections were made, producing 120 specimens from PSJA and another 120 from PC (240 total) for identification of stomach contents and determination of the diet. For PSJA, H. guttatus had a mean weight of 6.2 g and mean standard length (SL) of 52.7 mm, whereas specimens from PC showed means of 4.4 g and 49.4 mm LS. Stomach contents contained a total of 26 taxa, including one of vegetal origin (algae) and 18 of animal origin: crustaceans (6), mollusks (3), insects (7) and fishes (2). Frequency of occurrence analysis showed more preference for algae, crustaceans and insects, especially the families Zygnemataceae, Cypridae (Ostracoda) and Chironomidae (Diptera). Tendencies exist for seasonal variation in the diet as a result of availability of the array of food items in the habitat.
