San Pedro River: historical composition of native fishes, observations by Hubbs and Miller in the 1950s, conditions in 2004, and future plans

Abstract

Robert Rush Miller’s 1961 paper “Man and the changing fish fauna of the American Southwest” was one of the first to describe changes in native fish commun ities in the Southwest as a result of human factors. The Arizona Game and Fish Department currently monitors the San Pedro River in southern Arizona, through funding provided by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Department. This presentation takes a look back at the historic fish fauna of the river, discusses changes over time and their plausible reasons, and describes potential native fish restoration projects within the basin.

El Río San Pedro: composición histórica de peces nativos, observaciones por Hubbs y Miller en los 1950s, condiciones en 2004, y planes para el futuro El artículo de 1961 por Ro bert-Rush Miller “El humano y la fauna de peces cambiante del suroeste norteamericano” fue uno de los primeros que describe los cambios en las comunidades de peces nativos del suroeste por causas antropogénicas. El Departamento de Caza y Pesca de Arizona actualmente monitorea el Río San Pedro en el sur de Arizona, con fondos provistos por la Oficina de Reclamación de Estados Unidos de América y por el mismo Departamento.
