Abstract

This symposium is a salute to Wendell L. Minc kley and James E. Deacon, two of the founding members of the Desert Fishes Council. Presentations from former students or colleagues of Minckley and Deacon largely reflect current research or mana gement activities dedicated to the preservation of desert fishes. It is designed to remind DFC members why the Council was founded and emphasize why our original responsibility must not change. The growing challenges to a future for desert aquatic ecosystems and species therein (not just fishes) must be met with good science and dedication. We have voices, something the organisms we want to protect lack, and our voices need to be heard loudly!

Resumen

Introducción al Simposio Este simposio es un saludo a Wendell L. Minckl ey y James E. Deacon, dos de los miembros fundadores del Consejo de Peces del Desierto (DFC, por sus siglas en inglés). Las presentaciones de alumnos o colegas de Minckley y Deacon, muestran de manera notoria las investigaciones actuales o

actividades de manejo dedicadas a la preservación de los peces del desierto. Está diseñado para recordar a los miembros del DFC, por qué se fundó este Consejo y para enfatizar el por qué nuestra responsabilidad original no debe cambiar. Los crecientes retos del futuro para los ecosistemas acuáticos del desierto, y las especies que allí habitan (no sólo peces), deben ser enfrentados con buena ciencia y dedicación. Tenemos voz, algo que los organismos que queremos proteger no poseen , y nuestra voz debe ser escuchada fuertemente!
