Apache trout protection evaluation study: habitat use

Abstract

This study investigated if Apache trout, Oncorhynchus apache *, habitat use changed as a function of time after streams were fenced to exclude livestock. We measured used and available habitat in seven White Mountains streams in east-central Arizona, that were fenced 0-13 years ago. Apache trout used similar habitat on all streams surveyed, selecting a de eper, wider, and less-current velocity habitat than randomly chosen available sites. Cover at used sites was composed of more boulders and less in-stream vegetation than random sites. So far, we have not detected any effect of time-since-fencing on habitat use of Apache trout. Estudio de evaluación sobre protección de trucha apache: uso de hábitat Este estudio se realizó con el objetivo de saber si la trucha apache, Oncorhynchus apache*, cambió el uso de su hábitat en función del tiempo, después de que las corrientes fueron cercadas para excluir al ganado. Se midieron hábitats utilizados por la trucha y hábitats disponibles en siete corrientes de las Montañas White al este y centro de Arizona, que fueron cercadas recientes y/o desde hace 13 años. La trucha apache usaba un hábitat similar en todos los sistemas que se revisaron, selecci onando el hábitat de mayor profundidad, amplitud y menor velocidad de la corriente más que los sitios disponibles escogidos al azar. La cobertura en los sitios utiliza dos estaba compuesta de más rocas grandes y menos vegetación en la corriente, que en los sitios al azar. Hasta ahora, no se ha detectado ningún efecto del tiempo (en el uso de hábitat) desde el cercado de las corrientes.
