Abstract
The High Levee Pond is a two-hectare pond located on Cibola National Wildlife Refuge near Blythe, California. It was established in 1993 as a native fish growout facility for bonytail, Gila elegans, and razorback sucker, Xyrauchen texanus. In 1999, it was decided to cease removal of fish from the pond and, instead, allow the population to develop on its own, thus providing the opportunity to study the bonytail in depth (whose biology is virtually unknown), and the early life history stages of both species. This presentation details the development of the facility, including numbers of fish stocked, repatriated to the lower Colorado River, and the information collected on this population after 1998. This information will be applied to future native fish h abitats being developed in th e lower Colorado River basin, and to increase knowledge on the biology of these fishes.
