Spotted jew elfish, Hemichromis guttatus , an exotic fish eradicated from Poz a San José del Anteojo, Cuatro Ciénegas Valley, Coahuila, México

Abstract

The present study was conducted in Poza San José del Anteojo, Cuatro Ciénegas Valley, Coahuila, México, from May 2000 to April 2002, with the objective of eradicating the spotted jewelfish, Hemichromis guttatus, an African cichlid introduced in many places in the valley by unknown persons. From the first visit to Poza San José del Anteojo, we fo und th is cich lid an d a few ind ividuals o f Mex ican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus , but al lot her species that had previously occupied this pool had been eliminated by the introduced species. We visited the area 19 times during a period of three years and in different months of the year, collecting fishes by setting 25 minnow tra ps each day and running them every hour. The population of spotted jewelfish varied throughout the study, with first sample in May 2000 containing 3,041 specimens, but only four specimens were captured in the last sample in April 2002. In total, we collected 19,115 speci mens, and an unknown number was removed by the owner of the land who helped in the extraction by running one t rap e very day for m ore t han si x m onths. Along with the rem oval of exotics, the first reintroduction of native fishes was made in M ay 2 000 by st ocking Astyanax mexi canus, Ictalurus s p., Gambusia marshi and Cichlasoma [Herichthys] minckleyi, all of which were obtained from La Becerra Canal adjacent to Poza San José de Anteojo. Howev er, no n atives w ere found at t he next sam pling. Later , in Apr il 2 002, we ag ain reintroduced the same speci es from the same source. On the latest visit in August 2 002, all fou r n atives were abundant, but the Ictalurus sp. were all juveniles and success of the reintroduction can not yet be assessed, and C. [H.] minckleyi was seen in nuptial coloration and nests were detected, but no broods were observed.. The spotted jewelfish was not found in the last sam pling and apparently has been eradicated from the site, thus representing the first documented eradication of this exotic species.

Resumen

Pez joya manchado, Hemichromis guttatus, pez exótico erradicado de la Poz a San José del Anteojo en el Valle de Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, México El presente trabajo se realizo en la Poza San José del Anteojo, en el Valle de Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, México, de mayo del 2000 a abril del 2002, a fin de erradicar al pez joya manchado, Hemichromis guttatus, un cíchlido exótico procedente de Africa e in troducida en varios sitios en el va lle por personas desconocidas. A partir de la fecha de la primer visita, la poza se en contró p rácticamente con est e cí chlido y pocos i ndividuos del a sardi nita mexicana, Astyanax mexicanus , todas las demás especi es habí an sido e xterminadas por la especie exótica. Se realizaron 19 muestreos en diferentes meses durante los tres años en que se ha venido realizando el estudio. El método de muestreo fue con t rampas de co no (“ minnow t raps”); se col ocaron 2 5 t rampas por dí a y fue ron revisadas cada hora. La población del cíchlido presentó variantes durante las diferentes fechas que se visitó el lugar. Sin embargo, a partir del primer muestreo, en el cual se colect aron 3,0 41 en m ayo del 20 00, para a bril del 20 02 solo se extrajeron cuatro individuos. En total, capturamos 19,115 individuos, y hay que mencionar que se contó con la colaboración del dueño del predio donde se encuentra la poza, ya que él también, con una trampa, realizó muestreos diarios durante mas de seis meses, donde extrajeron un núm ero desconoci do del cíchlido e xótico. Conjuntamente con la extracción, se hicieron repoblación con varias especies nativas. La primera siembra se realizó en mayo del 2000, cuando se liberaron especies tales como Astyanax mexicanus , Ictalurus s p., Gambusia m arshi y Cichlasoma [Herichthys] minckleyi, capturados del Canal de La Becerra adyacente a la Poza San J osé de Ante ojo. En este caso el resultado fue completamente nulo, ya que para la siguiente visita no se encontraron dichas especies nativas. Posteriormente, en abril del 2002, fueron sembrados nuevamente las especies nativas, capturadas del mismo sitio. Para la v isita mas reciente, agosto d el 200 2, to das las esp ecies n ativas se han establecido abundantemente, no o bstante Ictalurus sp . fueron individuos jóvenes y no se puede evaluar su éxito aún, y en el caso de C. [H.] minckleyi, se le encontró con coloración nupcial y ni dos, pero no observamos crí as. Act ualmente la especie exótica, pez joya manchado, Hemichromis guttatus, ha sido erradicada de ésta poza, y aparentemente, es el primer caso en que ha sido erradicada.
