Abstract

The family Percidae is a dominant member of the ichthyofauna of eastern North America. In species number and faunal abunda nce, it is surpassed only by the minnows and s hiners (family Cy prinidae). O ft he si x native genera, Etheostoma is the largest and widest ranging. The genus contains several subgenera, of w hich only Oligocephalus ranges into Mexico. In 1997, a southwestern darter species group, contained within this subgenus, was hypothesized by St even Norris and Wendell M inckley base d on the presence of a hy omandibular spur and several general pigmentation characters. It contains Etheostoma l epidum (Texas, New Mexico), E. g rahami (Texas, Mexico), E. australe (Mexico), E. lugoi (Mexico), E. segrex (Mexico), and E. pottsi (Mexico). These species are found in both upland and endorheic habitats from western Mexico to central Texas. Initial analyses using the mitochondrial ND2 gene supported the monophyly of this group, although sampling was limited. Results of a more intensive sampling regime and analysis using both ND2 and cytochrome b is presented.
