My favorite fishing holes in west Texas: where did they go?

Abstract

This presentation gives an historical perspective of water resources once occurring in Trans-Pecos Texas, particularly Pecos County, from 1940 to 1980, and the fishes and other aquatic organisms that were associated with its springs, creeks, lakes and rivers. Recreational fishing was the initial impetus for visiting these “fishing holes.” This in turn led to a young man developing an interest in the natural history of the region. By the late 1950s, the springs were nearly gone, wetland marshes and creeks had disappeared, and the rivers looked more like sluggish creeks. The drought of the 1950s, coupled with the boom in pump-irrigation projects, spelled the doom for this aquatic wonderland.

Mis pozas de pesca favoritas en el oeste de Texas: ¿a dónde se fueron? Se presenta una semblanza histórica de los recursos acuá ticos otrora presentes a lo largo del sistema Trans-Pecos en Texas, en particular en el Condado Pecos, de 1940 a 1980, y de los peces y otros organismos acuáticos asociados a sus manantiales, cañadas, arroyos, lagos y ríos. El motivo original de las visitas a estas “pozas de pesca” fue la pesca recreativa; ello generó el interés de un joven por la ecologí a de la región. Al final de los 1950, los manantiales habían

casi desaparecido, las marismas de humedales y los arroyos habían desaparecido, y los ríos se veían como lentos arroyos. La sequía de los 1950s, junto con el auge de los proyectos de irrigación por bombeo, se constituyó en el maleficio de esta maravilla acuática.
