Abstract

The June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program (JSRIP), consisting of many agency and private partners, made good progress in 2001, and also hosted a productive researchers meeting in May. Returning June sucker, Chasmistes liorus, were again captured this year on their annual spawning run up the Provo River from Utah Lake, and eggs fertilized at stream side we re transferred to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) Fisheries Experiment Station (FES) in Logan. The JSRIP-sponsored expansion of the FES facility for June sucker should be completed in 2001. Progress continues on plans for additiona l June sucker facilities in Goshen and Gandy, Utah. June suckers are currently being maintained and monitored at four refugia sites in northern Utah.

A multi-agency team, primarily consisting of UDWR, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and Trout Unlimited, has been active on multiple fronts in conserving populations of Bonneville cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarkii utah . Surveys continue to identify additional populations of pure strains, and a habitat restoration project continues. The USFWS should release its finding on whether or not listing is warranted for Bonneville cutthroat trout in 2001. Mosquito abatement districts in Ut ah have agreed in principle to a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with UDWR to limit the distribution of western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. This MOA should be signed in 2001. The mosquito abatement districts have further agreed to distribute an informational brochure when distributing western mosquitofish to private parties. Least chub, Iotichthys phlegethontis, surveys continue of the West Desert and Wasatch populations. West Desert populations are relatively stable. A number of concerned parties, including UDWR, the Bureau of Land Management, and The Nature Conservancy have atte mpted to purchase or otherwise protect the Bishop Springs/Foote Reservoir property, but have been unable to reach a satisfactory arrangement with the owner. The Wasatch Front population of least chub continues to be monitored at Mona Springs and the refuge population on Antelope Island. Large numbers of western mosquitofish and other nonnatives were removed from Mona Springs in November 2000; initial success of that effort will be evaluated in November 2001. The refuge population on Antelope Island appears stable. Spotted frog, Rana pretiosa, projects continue in the upper Provo River, where additional populations and habitats have been identified. Funding was secured from the Utah Department of Natural Resources (UDNR) this year to purchase a conservation agreement in the San Pitch drainage to protect spotted frog habitat. Leatherside chub, Snyderichthys copei , surveys and research continue to investigate the distribution and systematics of this species. Some UDNR monies were also secured this year for leatherside chub research. Surveys are being conducted in the Sevier River and Bear River drainages. Surveys and laboratory studies have been conducted this year by Utah State University to investigate the taxonomy of freshwater mussels in the Great Basin.
