First true freshwater crab found in US – at Lake Las Vegas!

Abstract

A number of live Geothelphusa dehaani, a true freshwater crab of the family Potamidae, were found on two separate occasions this year on the shore of Lake Las Vegas, a 320-acre man-made lake 17 miles south of Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the first known true freshwater crab found in the United States. Geothelphusa dehaani is native only to Japan. It was introduced via an intentional release from a sushi bar located in a hotel adjacent to the lake. Life history data and current knowledge of population status are presented.

Primera jaiba de agua dulce encontrada en EUA, en el Lago Las Vegas En dos ocasiones distintas este año se hallaron varios ejemplares vivos de Geothelphusa dehaani, una jaiba de agua dulce de la familia Potamidae en la orilla del Lago Las Vegas, un lago antropogénico de 320 acres ubicado a 17 millas [27.2 km] al sur de Las Vegas, Nevada. Este es el primer hallazgo, a saber, de jaiba de agua dulce en los EUA. Geothelphusa dehaani sólo es nativa de Japón, y fue introducida intencionalmente al lago desde un restaurant de sushi localizado en un hotel adyacente al lago.
