Abstract

Fossil evidence from the Late Pleistocene records the existence of some taxa of amphibians and reptiles living ca. 8000 years ago in northern México. Some genera such as Coleonyx, Gopherus, Crotalus, and Crotaphytus, among others, inhabited Oak-Juniper forests in what is now Tamaulipas, but their current distributions are

restricted to arid regions of North America. Tamaulipas has a significant percentage of its territory within xeric areas, and the present work represents a contribution to the knowledge on amphibians and reptiles showing adaptations to such regions. These environments are today under strong pressure by human activities, which contributes to the reduction or even disappearance of the species inhabiting them. Better knowledge on current distributions and the natural history of this herpetofauna will allow for the design of plans for its management and conservation. To do so, we did a bibliographic review and museographic information search in the herpetological collection of the Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Victoria, where information was found on diverse aspects of the distribution and natural history of five amphibian species (4 families) and 15 reptilian species (9 families).
