New introductions of fishes in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México

Abstract

Monterrey was founded around the source springs (Santa Lucia and Monterrey) of the small Río Santa Lucia. By the 1960s, the river had dried up and its bed was filled in. In recent years, the river was uncovered and channelized to convert it into a tourist attraction. Source water is from springs, but is recirculated in the channel, reaching the Río Santa Catarina only at times of excessively high water. Upon a visit, abundant populations of fishes were found; among them: Astyanax mexicanus , Cyprinus carpio var. koi, Ictalurus natalis , Xiphophorus variatus, X. maculatus , X. helleri, X. birchmanni , and Heros severus. Only the first is native and a well-known colonizer. The others are well-known cultured and aquaria species, except X. birchmanni , which is as yet noncommercialized, making it difficult to know who stocked it, when, and from where.

Nuevas introducciones de peces en Monterrey, Nuevo León, México Monterrey fue fundado en los alrededores de algunos manantiales (Santa Lucia y Monterrey), que formaban el pequeño Río Santa Lucia. El río fue secado y cubierto en los 1960s. En años recientes el río fue descubierto y canalizado para convertirlo en lugar de paseo turistico. El agua es de manantial, pero es recirculada en el canal, que derrama en el Río Santa Catarina sólo en tiempos de exceso de agua. Al visitarlo, se encontraron abundantes poblaciones de peces, entre ellos de las siguientes especies: Astyanax mexicanus, Cyprinus carpio var. koi, Ictalurus natalis, Xiphophorus variatus, X. maculatus, X. helleri, X. birchmanni, y Heros severus. Sólo la primera es nativa y, a saber, buena colonizadora; el resto son especies cultivadas y de acuario bien conocidas, excepto X. birchmanni, que por el momento no es comercial, por lo que es difícil saber quién y cuándo fue introducida, y de dónde procede.
