Abstract

The oil industry in the state of Tabasco, Mexico has produced changes in flora and fauna, especially in the aquatic environments. Fishes in the rivers of Tabasco are poorly known and only a few incomplete check lists are available. The goal of this paper is to present: 1) the species richness based on 1996-1997 collections in the rivers Grijalva, Mezcalapa, Samaria and González and 2) evaluate the changes produced by man in these river systems by means of the quantitative analysis of the variation in diversity.

(* indicates author who presented paper at symposium) The diversity includes 53 species, 36 genera, 21 families and 19 orders. The families of most taxonomic importance are Poeciliidae and Cichlidae. Species of economic interest are Thorichthys callolepis , T. ellioti, T. helleri, T. pasionis, Theraps bifasciatum, T. heterospilum, T. synspilum, T. guttulatum. T. nourissati, Cichlasoma parapetenia friedrichsthali , C. P. salvini , C. P. urophthalmus , Archocentrus octofasciatum , Petenia splendida , Oreochromis aureus , Centropomus parallelus , C. poeyi , C. undecimalis , Cathorops aguadulce , Potamarius nelsoni, Rhamdia guatemalensis, Atractosteus tropicus.

T. nourissati, Cichlasoma parapetenia friedrichsthali, C. P. salvini, C. P. urophthalmus, Archocentrus octofasciatum, Petenia splendida, Oreochromis aureus, Centropomus parallelus, C. poeyi, C. undecimalis, Cathorops aguadulce, Potamarius nelsoni, Rhamdia guatemalensis, Atractosteus tropicus . Bonytail is federally listed as endangered, its biology is poorly understood, and little is known of its movements. We conducted a 4 month telemetry study to assess the temporal and spatial movement patterns in Lake Mohave, a reservoir on the lower Colorado River where the largest population of bonytail is known to persist. Ten fish (3 reared in “backwaters” at Cibola National Monument - AZ, and 7 “wild” collected from Lake Mohave; 8 male and 2 female) were implanted with 90 day sonic tags and immediately released following surgery and tracked at least weekly until late August. The three Cibola fish were released at river mile (RM) 22. One of these fish was contacted in this same area the following week and not contacted thereafter. The other two were never contacted post-release. Five of the seven wild fish were released one mile above their capture location of RM 4. These five fish swam vigorously away and moved back down-lake. The remaining two fish were transported up-lake to RM 13. One of the chubs immediately returned down-lake to near the capture site, while the other either ejected the tag or died the following day. Throughout the summer the bonytail inhabited only the lower five miles of the 63 mile Lake Mohave, but they were never found near Davis Dam (RM 0). Bonytail primarily utilized the Arizona shoreline (75% of contacts) and the pelagic portion (17%) of the lake, and were rarely found along the Nevada shore (8%). Bonytail were typically found to be in the surface waters over the deepest portions of the lake during the day, and then they moved near shore at night. Bonytail shied away from our sampling boat as a rule, generally moving so as to stay at least 75 feet away, however, it is ironic that they inhabit the portions of the lake that see the highest boat usage.
