Watershed Restoration of our Forgotten Waters

Abstract

CÁ¬enagas are the ‘forgotten waters’ of the International Four Corners Region (Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora, Chihuahua and surrounds) and are in need of recognition, restoration and preservation. But this can’t be accomplished in a vacuum that neglects its watershed context. This paper details the core aspects of restoring cieÁ¬nagas, - we think of cieÁ¬naga, terrace and drainage and grassland repair as habitat ‘shallowing’ - emphasizing the recently developed technique of ‘Hinge-Felling’ stream-side Gooddings willows. This template can be applied to other tree-lined aridland waters.
