Abstract
Many aquatic organisms are cryptic and infrequently seen by the public, potentially causing apathy of the public toward these fishes and their ecosystems, which hinders their conservation Fortunately, advanced technological means to acquaint the public with these and other aquatic species is becoming increasingly common We developed methods to collect and process high definition underwater video footage that are specifically tailored to inexperienced users Here we show the quality of high-definition underwater footage possible with current low-cost, advanced technology, and how field biologists, managers, professors, and students can use such equipment to great effect with an array of lenses and inexpensive camera mounts We found low cost technology can provide spectacular visual results and has served as an effective tool to acquaint the public with the rare desert fishes found in our region
