Abstract

In conjunction with concurrent studies of mitochondrial DNA haplotype and protein variation in a Colorado River cutthroat meta-population, a study of their life history is being completed. A total of 350 trout were collected in the spring of 1996 from seven sites within the Sheep Creek drainage in the Uinta Mountains of Northeastern Utah. An additional three collections of 20 fish each were taken from one site to validate annulus formation. Growth rates and fecundity will be compared among the sample sites, some which have known introgression with non-native Yellowstone cutthroat trout ( Oncorhynchus clarki bouveri ) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss ) . Growth rates are being determined by analyzing sagitta otoliths and measuring annuli using the computer program Mocha. Fecundity is being determined by measuring number of ova per gram of ovary. Few fish exceed five years in age and growth, while rapid during the growing season, is limited by the harsh alpine climate. The average size of five year old cutthroat is 183 cm, whereas stocked rainbow trout average 16-18 months old and 280 cm.

Previously constructed fish migration barriers were failing or in danger of failing, and genetic and electrofishing surveys showed that both brown trout and rainbow trout had either ascended the lowest barrier, the Schaeffer Barrier, or been illegally reintroduced into the waters above it. The introduced fish species were found to be dangerously close to the next barrier upstream, the Templeton Barrier.

(* indicates author who presented paper at symposium) Reconstruction of the Templeton Barrier on the south fork of the Kern River was successfully undertaken in 1996. Reconstruction of the Schaeffer Barrier and construction of a new barrier downstream of it are in the planning stages. Mendoza, V.E.; Espinosa, P.H.H. and Fuentes, M.P. There is considerable information on the genus Centropomus, but no complete osteological description for all the species. The present paper shows the neurocranium and caudal elements as part of the analysis for the recognition of the monophyly of the genus. We use some other species of the family and Serranids as outgroups.
